Callaway has had one of the biggest turnarounds in girls basketball in Mississippi this season, improving by 11 wins so far over last season.
The biggest reason for the Lady Chargers’ big improvement has been the play of sophomore Jahanna Wilson.
The 5-foot-3 point guard had one of her best weeks of the season last week when she averaged 14.5 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals and led Callaway to two MHSAA Class 5A, Region 4 victories.
For her outstanding performances, Wilson has been named the Performance Therapy/MSB Metro Jackson Girls Basketball Player of the Week.
Wilson had 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and shot 88 percent from the free throw line in a 77-46 victory over Jim Hill. She had 16 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, 3 steals and 1 blocked shot and shot 100 percent from the free throw line in a 66-49 win over Warren Central.
Wilson – the daughter of Callaway assistant coach Larry Wilson – is averaging 14.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 3.7 steals and has led Callaway to a 23-5 record, 11 wins better than last year’s 12-15 mark. The Lady Chargers have won 10 straight games.
She ranks first in Mississippi in assists per game this season, according to MaxPreps.
“Jahanna is the engine that makes this team go,” Callaway coach Ashley Wilson said. “She leads the team in points, assists, steals and is second in rebounds. Jahanna’s basketball IQ is far more mature than her classification and she has a knack for getting the ball where it needs to be at the right time. When we are playing our best basketball, we can compete with any team in the state.”
Wilson has career highs of 26 points, 15 rebounds, 10 steals, 9 assists and 6 blocked shots.
She averaged 11.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals last year as a freshman.
Callaway plays Vicksburg Friday at 6 p.m. for the regional championship at Vicksburg. The teams have split in two regular season meetings this season.
