Madison Central running back Glen Singleton had a tremendous season last year as junior, gaining 1,284 yards and scoring 19 touchdowns.
He has followed that with an incredible senior season, passing even those huge numbers, and last week had the best game of his career.
The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Singleton had 24 carries for a career-high 225 yards (9.3 yards per carry) and five TDs to lead Madison Central to a 49-39 victory over Clinton last Thursday night in a MHSAA Class 7A, Region 2 game at Clinton.
For his outstanding performance, Singleton has been named the Junction Deli/Mississippi Scoreboard Metro Jackson Football Player of the Week.
He scored on runs of 24 yards in the first quarter, 3 yards in the second quarter, 16 yards in the third quarter and 39 yards and 12 yards in the fourth quarter.
Singleton now has 189 carries for 1,409 yards (7.5 yards per carry) and 21 TDs this season for the 8-2 Jaguars.
“Glen has been a workhorse for us all season,” Madison Central coach Toby Collums said. “He is a joy to coach mainly because of his work ethic and him being an unselfish teammate. Glen isn’t a big back, but he certainly runs like one at times. I’m very proud for him to be receiving this attention.”
“Glen has always been a kid that plays with max effort and will give you everything he has,” Madison Central offensive coordinator Dusty Finley said. “He is a team first guy that is just a football player that wants to win football games and doesn’t care if he is scoring TDs or if he’s blocking for the guy that’s scoring. Glen is a really good running back that runs hard every time he has the ball in his hands and truly believes he can score every time he touches the ball.”
The Madison Central school record for most rushing yards and TDs in a season is held by Bobo Brown, who gained 2,687 yards as a junior on the Jaguars’ 1999 state championship and undefeated team. Brown set the school record for TDs with 32 as a senior in 2000. He had 31 TDs as a junior. Brown gained 2,652 yards as a senior and had a school record 7,110 yards in his career.
Singleton is the son of Tenisha Singleton. She attended Madison Central. Singleton has a sister, Kurianna Weston, a freshman at Rosa Scott. She runs track.
Madison Central plays host to Desoto Central Friday night at 7 p.m. in the first round of the MSHAA Class 7A state playoffs at Madison Central in Madison.
