Germantown High’s Bryce Johnson hit for the cycle last week, the third player in the school’s 15-year history to accomplish the feat.

But the sophomore outfielder and leadoff hitter did more than that last week.

In addition to hitting a single, double, triple and home run in the second game of the week against Madison County rival Madison Central, Johnson also had three hits, including the game winner, in the first game of the MHSAA Class 7A, Region 2 series last week.

For his outstanding performance, Johnson has been named the Box Sports Academy/Mississippi Scoreboard Metro Jackson Baseball Player of the Week.

Johnson’s rare feat came in Germantown’s 10-5  loss to Madison Central in the second game of the series,. He joined Chandler Dillard in 2016 and Bryson Ware in 2019 to accomplish the cycle at Germantown. He hit a triple in the first inning, a double in the second inning, a single in the fourth inning and a home run in the sixth inning.

He had 3 singles, scored 1 run and had 1 run batted in and the game-winning hit in the eighth inning in a 3-2 victory over Madison Central in the first game of the series.

Johnson hit .700 (7 of 10 at bats) for the week.

He has a .342 batting average with 27 runs scored, 12 RBIs, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs and 8 stolen bases for Germantown, which has a 16-9 overall record and 5-3 in Class 7A, Region 2 play this season going into this week.

“Bryce was hurt the whole off season recovering from a football injury (broken foot),” Germantown coach Chris Peden said. “He was released the first week of the season. He is a really good hitter and defender. He has the best hands hitting that I have coached. Bryce is a hard worker who never lets the moment get to him. He stays composed. In addition to having the game winning hit, he had two game saving grabs in centerfield in game one. Then he hit for the cycle in game two. He will be a DIvision I baseball player if he chooses. Bryce has a football offer from Vanderbilt. He is really talented and a great young man.”

Johnson caught seven passes for 207 yards and one touchdown in seven games before he was injured for Germantown, which finished 8-4, reached the MHSAA Class 7A quarterfinals and ranked No. 6 in Mississippi by MaxPreps.

Johnson is the son of Dr. Mary P Johnson and Dr. Eric J Johnson. Mary played basketball and was a cheerleader at Millry (Ala.) High. She graduated from Alabama Birmingham and Vanderbilt. Eric played basketball at Meridian High and graduate from Alabama Birmingham and Southern College of Optometry.
