There’s a new rising star on the hot corner on the defending MHSAA Class 6A state champion Northwest Rankin baseball team.
His name is Trey Davidson and he’s off to a great start this season, especially last week.
The junior third baseman had three hits – a double, triple and home run – in an 11-1, five inning victory over MHSAA Class 6A rival Madison Central last week.
For his outstanding performance, Davidson has been named the PriorityOne Bank/Mississippi Scoreboard Metro Jackson Baseball Player of the Week.
Davidson was used as a designated hitter and a pinch runner and played in several games last year as a sophomore but took over the third base spot left by Brice Ainsworth, who was the first team third baseman on the 2022 All Metro Jackson team last season and is now playing at Hinds Community College.
Davidson is hitting .324 with 3 doubles, 2 triples and 1 home run and helped Northwest Rankin to an 8-2-1 record this season.
“Trey is a smooth fielder that helps solidify the middle part of our batting order,” Northwest Rankin coach KK Aldridge said. “He has great hand and eye coordination along with great bat control. Trey does a great job of taking what the pitcher gives him and uses the whole field. He has a lot of great baseball ahead of him. He has several junior colleges pursuing him already. Someone is going to get a great player in the future, but we definitely are looking forward to watching him excel on the diamond for the Cougars this year and next year.”
