Mississippi Scoreboard sportswriter Robert Wilson won second place for sports news story in the Class A Division in the Mississippi Press Association 2025 Better News Media Contest.
The awards were announced this weekend at the MPA annual meeting on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The Class A Division is the largest division for media outlets such as Mississippi Scoreboard, Mississippi Today, The Clarion Ledger, Supertalk Mississippi, Biloxi Sun-Herald and the Daily Journal among others.
Wilson won the award for his story on Madison-Ridgeland Academy boys basketball coach Richard Duease announcing that he will retire after the 2025-2026 season after 51 years of coaching, the last 44 years at MRA. Duease is the winning high school basketball coach in Mississippi history.
Wilson is a national award winning sportswriter, author, publisher and editor from Jackson, Miss. He won dozens of awards on the national, regional and state levels in his 23 years as a sportswriter for The Clarion-Ledger/Jackson Daily News, covering high school and college sports and writing a tennis column. Wilson also produced Victories in Metro Jackson, a Christian sports publication. He co-authored a book with Dr. Joe Haynes about the life of Dr. Haynes, who was the first black football official in the SEC and was an NFL official and a Mississippi educator for several decades. Wilson was inducted into the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2025, the first media member to be selected.
Wilson is well known among Mississippians for his ability to paint a picture of the subject he is writing about and not only about their ability, but about their personality as well. Wilson is a Jackson Wingfield High, Hinds Community College and Ole Miss graduate.
