Jackson Prep’s Will Gibbs verbally committed to Mississippi State’s top 5 nationally ranked baseball program last summer.
The junior right-hander is showing this spring, especially last week, why the Bulldogs want him on their Starkville campus in the fall of 2022.
Gibbs allowed just three hits and struck out 12 without a walk in six innings and shut out MHSAA Class 6A West Harrison 3-0 Tuesday in the Battle of the Beach on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
For his outstanding performance, Gibbs has been named the Two Men and a Truck/Mississippi Scoreboard Metro Jackson Baseball Player of the Week.
The 5-foot-9, 160-pound Gibbs has a 5-0 record with an 0.54 earned run average and 48 strikeouts in 26 innings for Jackson Prep, which was 17-2 and ranked No. 15 in the nation by Perfect Game entering this week.
“Will has been very consistent this year and was dominant down on the Coast,” Prep coach Brent Heavener said. “Will throws about 88 to 90 (miles per hour) with a good slider for a strikeout pitch. He has a live arm and will only get stronger.”
